INFORMATION ON YANGON

In earlier,before the British completed the conquest of Northern Myanmar ,Yangon (Rangoon) wasn't a capital of Myanmar. After the British conquered Myanmar, Yangon becomes the capital city of Myanmar .Yangon locates on the wide Yangon River, about 30 km far from the Andaman sea .It is the most crowded and very well known in Myanmar among the tourists. It's population is 4428696.There are many attractive places in Yangon such as eclectic combination of British colonial architecture like as City Hall ( Myo. Daw Kan Ma) near the Sule pagoda, Buddhist statues, Hindu temples, Christian churches and Muslim mosques. The most famous palce in Yangon is the Shwedagon pagoda. As the legend,it is 2500 years old and over. It was originally built by the King Okklapa .It situates on Singuttara Hill. Firstly, it wasn't as high as today. It was only 66 feet highs .Nowadays, it has 326 feet heights and circumferences of 1420 feet at the base.Most of tourists are interested in Shwedagon pagoda. There's another famous and interesting pagoda is Sule pagoda.It is located in the center of Yangon .Tourists are fascinated by that pagoda, too. Near the Sule pagoda, there is an Independence Monument. Furthermore,interesting place to visit is National Museum .It is on the Pyay Road . It is about 1 km north from Bogyoke Aung San Road and south of Indonesian embassy .You can see several marvelous exhibits, ancient Myanmar Kings ' things .Especially you could see King Thibaw's (the last Burmese king) Sihasana (Lion Throne).As well as you would see Myanmar Traditional Musical Instruments and also Burmese court costumes. If you like to take photos of these things, it would charge US$ 100 for photo taking and US$ 200 for video taking .Another remarkable place for myanmar people is Martyrs' Mausoleum where memorial of Bogyoke Aung San and his fellow cabinet officers who were murdered by Galon U Saw and his followers .In late 1983, North Koreans killed a number of South Korea's top government officers by bomb attack here, too. This opens only once a year on 19 July.

North of the city, there a huge lake which called Inya Lake .It is five times larger than the Kandawkyi (Royal Lake).On opposite of the lake,people believe that a powerful Nat locked in a battle of wills .At the southern end, Aung San Suu Kyi is under house arrest at 54 University Ave until now. Moreover,another interesting and picnicking place is Kandawkyi (Royal Lake).You would see the best sunset view from the lake . On the Bogyoke Aung San Road,there is a big market which name is same as the Road , Bogyoke Aung San Market,70 years old market (British name is Scott Market ). A lot of Burmese handicrafts ,Burmese souvenirs from lacquer ware and Shan shoulder bags to T-shirt and cherrots are there .One thing is make sure to read Facts for Visitor Chapter before you buy Precious stones & Jeweler. Even though they are expensive, they are very beautiful. If you like to set up a house in Yangon, you should go to the Mingalar market which located at the southeast of Kandawkyi and in Mingalar Taung Nyaunt Township .

You can get cheaper textiles, clothes, electrical appliances, plastic ware, preserved and tinned food stuff, modern medicines and cosmetic from Thailand , China and Singapore. If you have time, you could go for excursion across the river to Thanlyin and (Mid-River pagoda, Ye- Lal- Kyauktan). It takes u only 1 hour to across over the river by car.You can also visit to Kyaik-Khauk Pagoda which is on the hill to the north of the road.

In Yangon, it is very easy to have several kind of food. If you want to try Myanmar Traditional food, especially you should go to Aung Thuka and Hla Myanmar Htamin Zein (Beautiful Myanmar Rice Shop)somtimes called in Shwe Ba. You can also have Chinese and Indian foods in Shwe Ba . In downtown ,there is a China Town .It is very crowded ,especially from evening until midnight .There are a lot of Internet cafes in Yangon .They are reasonable .And around the Yangon there are a lot of beaches such as Chaung Thar, Letkhokkone, Sattsal beaches. You shouldn't miss around the Yangon too.

Chaungthar beach is not too far from the capital. It may take only 5 hours to arrive there. Beige sand, coconut palms, casuarinas trees are the attractive things of Chaungthar .However,it has heavy rainfall and high waves during the southwest monsoon season, over 20 hotels and guesthouses have opened for business at Chaungthar. Although Yangon is still developing, it has a lot of places to visit and have fun. I hope you would enjoy after you have been around the Yangon (Rangoon).
